Born into a military family, Bruce lived in Memphis TN, Dayton OH and in upstate New York and in England and France, graduating from high school in France.

A Phi Beta Kappa, summa cum laude graduate of Washington and Lee University in 1969, Bruce served as a 1st Lieutenant in the Infantry. He has practiced at Harrison & Johnston since graduating from the University of Virginia law school in 1976, recently celebrating 40 years with the firm.

Bruce has a broad general business practice, addressing and solving problems for his business clients. He represents landlords, employers and institutions on employment, corporate and transactional matters. From 1988-2003, he was General Counsel for Grafton School which runs a multi campus program for children and adults with severe disabilities. His work with Grafton included property acquisition, defense of federal and state litigation and advising the board on a variety of legal matters. He regularly advises clients on employment matters, including unemployment compensation claims, disability and medical leave issues and employee terminations.

Bruce represents Frederick County Schools on land acquisition issue for new school sites. His clients include, assisted living centers, a large manufactured home rental subdivision and multiple home owners associations.

As his clients have aged, Bruce spends more of his practice on elder law issues, including will and trust administration, and dealing with the myriad issues of growing old. He has several clients well into their 90’s who require practical and legal assistance.

Bruce has long been active in the Winchester community. He has served as President of the United Way, Big Brothers-Big Sisters, Friends of the State Arboretum at Blandy, Grafton School, Inc. and of Preservation of Historic Winchester; and has served on many other local boards. He was a founding board member and first president of the Community Foundation of the Northern Shenandoah Valley. He serves as counsel, pro bono, to Winchester Preschool and other charities. He strives to resolve problems for his clients in a speedy and cost effective manner.
